THÀNHTIẾN

THANHTIEN is a typical example of how a piece often begins. A found object or material sets the starting point, and everything else develops around it.

At a clearance sale, I came across a large aluminium tray that caught my attention. At its centre is a sticker reading “Thanhthien”.
I haven’t found a translation I’d feel confident sharing here. If you know more, I’d be curious to hear…

…I chose to complete it with a delicate structure of intersecting legs. For this, I used thin strips of a dark hardwood from my grandfather’s workshop – its exact species unknown to me.

Another circular tray, made of orange Plexiglas, completes the composition. Catching and refracting light along its edges, it adds a subtle, luminous detail.
